Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

What is Excessive sweating or Hyperhidrosis?  What is the treatment for Excessive sweating or Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is defined as increased sweat secretion.  Although it can affect any part of the body, the axillae (armpits), palms and soles are most commonly affected.  The cause of hyperhidrosis may be unknown or secondary to metabolic/endocrine disorders, fever, or medications.  Implicated metabolic disorders include hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, gout, and menopause.  The most common medications causing hyperhidrosis include propranolol, physostigmine, pilocarpine, tricyclic antidepressants, and SSRIs.  The three forms of hyperhidrosis include emotionally-induced, localized and generalized.  Hyperhidrosis may cause emotional distress and occupational disability in some patients.

Treatment options include but are not limited to antiperspirants, systemic anticholinergic medications and injectable botulinum toxin A.
