What is Psoriasis? What are the treatments for Psoriasis?

Psoriasis affects approximately 2% of the general population and is a chronic, noncontagious, multisystem, inflammatory disorder that results from a genetic predisposition combined with triggering factors. It is characterized by itchy, well-defined, erythematous plaques with silvery white scales. The most common sites of involvement are the scalp, elbows, knees and lumbosacral region. Nail psoriasis may cause pits on the nails, which often become thickened and yellowish in color as well as separation from the nail bed. Psoriasis has a tendency to wax and wane with flares related to systemic or environmental factors, including stress, trauma, infection and medications.  Although psoriasis is usually benign, it is a lifelong illness with remissions and exacerbations and is sometimes refractory to treatment. This condition is worse in the dry winter weather while warmer weather and sunlight are reported to be beneficial.  Psoriasis can be more severe, and present with systemic manifestations including fever and arthritis.

Psoriasis treatment options include multiple topical and systemic therapies.  Light therapy with UVB and lasers have shown to be of benefit as well.
