I'm Self-Conscious About My Rosacea: Can You Help?
Your rosacea started as flushing and blushing, but your symptoms are getting worse, and the redness and bumps have become persistent and most unwelcome companions. In reality, you feel like a teenager with a bad acne outbreak all over again, and those are experiences you’d rather not relive.
A recent study on rosacea found that this skin condition is more common than we previously thought — it affects slightly more than 5% of the global population, including 14 million people in the United States — so you’re certainly not alone in feeling self-conscious about your rosacea.
While there’s no cure for rosacea, the good news is that there are plenty of treatment options to manage your symptoms, and we offer those that work best here at Z-ROC Dermatology.
As highly trained and experienced dermatologists, Dr. Khongruk Wongkittiroch and Dr. Matthew Zarraga have a deep understanding of the science of skin and which solutions work best for common conditions like rosacea.
In the following, we briefly review how we help clients gain more confidence in their skin through effective and evidence-based rosacea treatments.
Tackling persistent redness
If persistent redness in your skin is your primary concern, we can tackle this side effect with vasoconstrictors. The redness occurs when blood vessels in your face enlarge and stay that way.
To shrink these vessels back down, we can prescribe brimonidine gel or oxymetazoline cream, both of which are vasoconstrictors you apply daily.
We can also use specialized laser therapies that target these blood vessels to shrink them down and destroy them — a technique that works especially if you’ve developed permanent facial veins.
Targeting acne-like breakouts
If your rosacea is causing red bumps to develop across your face that look like acne breakouts, we have a large arsenal for this side effect, including:
- Retinol creams to encourage healthier skin cell turnover
- Topical and oral antibiotics, including doxycycline, tetracycline, minocycline, and isotretinoin
- Azelaic acid, which can also tackle redness
- Encapsulated benzoyl peroxide cream
- Laser therapy with our cutting-edge Cutera® XLV and Palomar Icon® systems
Each of these treatments is highly effective at clearing away rosacea bumps and pustules and restoring clear skin to your face.
Addressing rosacea inflammation
If your rosacea is also causing inflammation in your skin, we have great solutions for this side effect, too, such as:
- Ivermectin cream
- Minocycline foam
- Topical antibiotics
For most of our patients who see us for rosacea, we typically recommend a combination of solutions and emphasize managing rosacea triggers as part of your overall treatment plan.
