What are Spider and Varicose Veins?
Spider and varicose veins are caused by incompetent leg veins, in which venous blood flows in a retrograde direction causing fluid to accumulate in legs. Clinically, they appear as red, blue or purple vessels, most commonly on the legs. Most patients with venous insufficiency have subjective symptoms that may include pain, soreness, burning, aching, throbbing, cramping, and muscle fatigue. The largest contributing factor to the development of spider and varicose veins is genetics. However, hormone fluctuations, obesity, pregnancy, menopause, and jobs that require prolonged periods of standing can exacerbate this condition.
Treatment options include sclerotherapy, the Cynosure/Palomar Icon Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and 1064nm Nd:YAG lasers, laser ablation, and ambulatory phlebectomy.
