There are many kinds of warts, usually categorized by their distinct appearance and location on the body.
Common warts
Also called verruca vulgaris, these are raised, cauliflower-like lesions that typically affect the hands, but can also be found on other areas of the body.
Flats warts
These are skin-colored or reddish, smooth surfaced, slightly elevated and flat-topped papules most commonly located on the dorsal hands, arms or face.
Plantar warts
Plantar warts begin as small shiny blemishes and progress to thick, deep sores on the soles and sides of the feet. These grow deep inside the skin of the foot, making walking painful. They are usually found on weight-bearing areas, such as the heel.
Genital warts
Also called condylomas, genital warts are found in the genital area and are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are transmitted through sexual contact with an infected partner.
You may notice itching or wart-like lesions on the external genitalia, perineum or perianal areas, and the warts can even extend into the vagina, urethra and anal canal. It can take anywhere from a few weeks up to several months after intercourse before you begin to experience these symptoms.
